Special Events & Development Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Special Events & Development Manager will be responsible for growing the Special Events programs for the Crohn’s & Colitis New England chapter to $1.5 million dollars over the next two years.  This highly driven Special Events & Development Manager will develop strategies and implement event best practices that will lead to profitable special events programs within the chapter.  This position will also direct the selection, development and implementation of new special events to ensure that chapter-based special events goals and objectives are met. This position will provide leadership, vision and support to chapter volunteers to help maximize growth potential of the campaign.  

Qualifications Required:

  • BA/BS degree with relevant experience
  • Minimum 3 years in not-for-profit fundraising, preferably within a health-related organization
  • Skilled and experienced in event planning and major gift cultivation
  • Capable of building and sustaining relationships with a variety of individuals and businesses
  • Successful track record in fundraising, specifically in special events and corporate sponsorships
  • Strong leadership skills in volunteer management and development
  • Skilled in relationship building and relating well to vendors, donors, volunteers, committee members, and Board members
  • Exceptional organizational, implementation, and training skills
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks under pressure achieving desired results in a timely manner
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, and cultivate high impact volunteers across all special events. This includes event chairs, committee leadership, committee members, and event day volunteers
  • Work with Board members and the Chapter Medical Advisory Committee to participate in major special events
  • Work with Chapter Lead Staff on donor development by cultivating new prospects through special events
  • Cultivate a pipeline of future volunteer committee chairs and honorees for all special events
  • For each special event, secure volunteers for the Auction, Corporate Sponsorship, and Marketing/PR subcommittees to ensure event goals are met
  • Reach out to high impact donors from past special events to recruit these individuals for committee or other volunteer roles


  • Work with chapter on special event strategies as it relates to identifying and cultivating major gift and sponsorship prospects
  • Plan and execute strategies for developing and soliciting sponsorships to grow corporate support
  • Work with corporate donors to fulfill sponsorship benefits; Create Return on Investment reports post-event to cultivate corporate relationships
  • Analyze and improve existing special events portfolio to meet and exceed the special events budget
  • Create effective communications to drive revenue through email, letter, and vendor campaigns
  • Track year over year revenue breakdown for each special event, including, corporate sponsorship, journal ad revenue, ticket sales, planned Fund the Mission lead gifts, and confirmed fair market value of auction items


  • For special events that utilize an ad book, track detailed donor information with the message or ad to include in the book. Follow-up with donors as needed to ensure all information is accurate to be printed
  • Set up event websites, and pull data reports to track event details
  • Oversee all aspects of major event implementation, including securing and organizing auction donations and packages; overseeing all logistics such as venue, food, decorations, invitations and event day volunteers; acting as liaison to vendors and sponsors; managing run of show at events
  • Conduct all event follow-up, including collection of pledges, tax receipts, and thank you letters
  • Maintain accurate and complete records and files for major special events
  • Develop a training curriculum that includes planning guides and marketing tools
  • Collaborate with the development and marketing departments to develop marketing and promotion materials
  • Work with chapter to share best practices that produce revenue growth

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Physical Demands:  While performing duties of the job, the incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. 

Work Environment:  Travel is required during some weeknights and weekends for meetings. This position will work out of the Needham Chapter office, but also have the ability to work remotely from time to time.
